Written for John Fonville and Steven Schick, this first foray into a freer compositional methodology builds from a “found” 12-note series. It distorts the original intervallic relationships from the outset, however, and, in the middle of the piece, abandons the row for a new, original one. The ensemble of “non-pitched” percussion instruments is treated as a coequal carrier of melodic material, which requires the careful tuning of the various drum heads.
