Danse d’été (Inflorescence III)

In this miniature “summer dance” commissioned by the Calliope Duo on the occasion of their tenth anniversary, I weave pitch class collections from the opening of Varèse’s solo flute piece, Density 21.5, into the harmonic fabric while a dilated version of that classic work’s temporal structure guides the present work’s harmonic rhythm. The counterpoint between the instruments is manic and densely tangled.
